Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
